Q: Does running in this Race qualify me for the marathon? Can I get my official time?

The Komen Greater New York City Race for the Cure is a “fun run.” Since it is not timed, it’s not a competitive qualifying race. Participants are encouraged to check their time when they cross the finish line.

Yes, for an additional fee. Make sure to select the Premium Upgrade option when registering. Your materials will arrive during the first week of September.

Q: Are children allowed to run/walk in the Race?

Children may participate in the Race as long as they are able to complete the course on their own. All participants including children must be registered for the Race and their parent or legal guardian must sign the waiver on their behalf. Note: Due to the high volume of race participants baby strollers and pets are strongly discouraged. No bikes or rollerblades, are permitted on the Race course.

Q: Will the Race be cancelled if it rains on Race Day?

The Race takes place rain or shine. Komen Greater NYC reserves the right to cancel the Race in extreme circumstances. In that event, there will be no refunds. Entry fees will be used as donations to the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Yes. There is a baggage claim facility on the 72nd Street Transverse -- the entrance into the park on Central Park West and 72nd Street. Baggage claim will close at 11 a.m. on Race Day.

Q: How much is registration?

Registration for the Komen Greater NYC Race for the Cure is $35 through July 15, 2011. On July 16, registration will be $40 until Race Day. Day-of-Race registration is $45.

Q: Is my registration fee tax-deductible?

No, your registration fee helps defray the costs of producing the Race. However, if you choose the premium registration option, $15 of the fee is a tax-deductible donation to Komen Greater New York City. All pledge contributions are tax-deductible.

Q: How much of my registration fee goes toward finding a cure for breast cancer?

None of it. Your registration fee is used to offset the cost of producing the Race. So it’s really important to get your friends, family and coworkers to support your Race participation with pledges. Of the money raised at the Race, 75% will go to community-based organizations with breast health programs for underserved women in New York City, on Long Island, and in Westchester and Rockland counties. The remaining 25% will support national research to find the cures for the disease.

Q: What is the difference between Advance Registration and the Premium Upgrade option?

If you opt for the Premium Upgrade option, your materials will be mailed to you, whether you’re an individual or on a team. Individuals who choose Advance Registration will have to pick up their Race materials. (Visit the Race section) Team members should contact their team captain about where to pick up your Race materials. If you’re unsure of your Race captain’s name, email teams@komennyc.org.

Q: Do I have to collect pledge money to participate in the Race?

You are not required to collect pledge money to join in the Race, but we encourage all participants to raise as much money as possible to help in the fight against breast cancer. If each person collects just $250 in pledges, we’ll be able to raise more than $5 million! Your registration fee helps defray the cost of producing the Race. It does not provide any contribution to Komen Greater NYC.

Q: How can I make sure that Komen gets the most from my fundraising efforts?

There are several ways you can ensure that your fundraising will provide the most benefit for Komen Greater NYC, our grantees, and our community.

  • Take the $250 Challenge.
  • If you don't feel you can raise $250, raise anything above your registration fee. The registration fees cover some of the costs of the Race and does not include a donation to Komen, so please raise whatever you can for the Race.
  • If you don't wish to fundraise, please consider making a donation to Komen Greater NYC. Any amount above the registration fee is a tax-deductible donation to Komen Greater NYC.
  • When you register, select "no" when asked whether you want to receive a pledge prize for your fundraising. This will help Komen Greater NYC save on the costs associated with the pledge prizes
Back to Top

Q: What is The $250 Challenge?

The $250 Challenge Please check the online registration box and take The $250 Challenge. If every 2010 Race participant had raised at least $250, Komen Greater NYC would have been able to provide $500,000 more in grants to help local organizations provide breast health education, screening and treatment. (For those of you who raised a lot more than $250 in previous years, please keep up the good work!) When you register online, check that you want to participate. If you're already registered, just raise a minimum of $250. Either way, you'll be helping Komen Greater NYC provide more grants to our community, and you'll be eligible to receive pledge prizes.

Q: How can I pay tribute to someone special at the Race?

You can honor your loved ones by wearing the unique “In Celebration of” and “In Memory of” placards, provided by Zeta Tau Alpha. Placards are available at Advance Registration and on Race Day.

Q: What is Sleep In for the Cure?

Can't make the Race? You can still help run breast cancer out of town by signing up for Sleep In for the Cure. We'll mail you a Race t-shirt and special bib. Your fundraising efforts will be eligible for pledge prizes too! Support the fight against breast cancer even if you can't make it to Central Park.

Q: I want to fundraise but I don't want a pledge prize. Can I opt out of pledge prizes?

When you register, select "no" when asked whether you want to receive a pledge prize for your fundraising. This will help Komen Greater NYC save on the costs associated with the pledge prizes.
