“Our team participates in the Race in appreciation of Komen Greater NYC’s support of Sharsheret’s breast health education and outreach efforts,” Kleinhaus said.  “For example, this spring, we hosted a symposium with support from Komen Greater NYC — The Whole Picture:  A Holistic Approach to Breast Health and Breast Cancer.

Sharsheret is a national organization supporting young Jewish women and their families, of all backgrounds, who are facing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.  The team is made up of young women with breast cancer and ovarian cancer, survivors, family members, health care professional, students and volunteers — all who are passionate about the cause.  The disease has touched the lives of every team member either directly or through family and friends.

Team Sharsheret recruits new members through:

  • Postcard mailings to thousands of contacts in the tri-state area.
  • Weekly email reminders to supporters
  • Flyers distributed to local stores and companies.
  • Postings on the organization website, Facebook and Twitter.

Team fundraising has been successful thanks to the tools providing on the Komen Greater NYC Race website.

When asked about a favorite memory, Kleinhaus cited being the largest community team in 2010 for the sixth year in a row.  “It’s always amazing to see the many women and men who are part of our team together at this incredible event,” she explained.  “Last year, we were especially gratified when we met Nancy Brinker upon accepting our team award.”
