City in Pink

City in Pink is a weeklong tribute in lights during which New York City buildings and stores illuminate and decorate themselves in pink to promote breast cancer awareness and celebrate the start of Race Week.

In 2009, 35 structures and stores were illuminated each evening. In addition, there were six virtual City in Pink participants who turned their websites pink for the occasion.

Every year, City in Pink kicks off with an invitation-only party. Last year’s event was held at the Samsung Experience on the third floor of the Shops at Columbus Circle in the Time Warner Center.

The evening’s program was hosted by WCBS-TV anchorman Maurice DuBois and featured remarks from Komen Greater NYC CEO Dara Richardson-Heron, MD and married actors Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker (“LA Law”). During the program, Jill announced the recent recurrence and successful treatment of her breast cancer earlier this year, stunning the room. She talked about the differences between her first bout with the disease in 1986 and 2009 and the changes were marked.
