Every 19 seconds, somewhere in the world a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer; every 74 seconds, a woman dies from breast cancer.

We are aiming high once again this year, working to surpassing our previous fundraising records. Our goal for the 2012 Race is to underwrite more grants than ever in 2013 to fund local community-based organizations providing education, outreach, screening coordination, support and treatment programs to underserved New Yorkers.

Remember, seventy-five cents of every dollar you raise goes to our mission of saving lives and achieving a world without breast cancer.

The work Komen Greater NYC does is more important now than ever. Unemployment rates are still high, and as the economic crisis continues, too many of our neighbors have limited or no health insurance.

With your help, we can make sure they have access to the high quality breast health screening and services they deserve.

When you register as an individual or team member, make life easy for yourself by ordering the Mail My Race Packet. For $40* (just $5 over the registration fee), your Race t-shirt and bib will be mailed to you prior to Race Day. The cost of the packet only covers the costs of producing the Race so please consider making a donation to help fight breast cancer.

Also while registering, you are eligible to receive a free subscription to either Self or GQ Magazine courtesy of Condé Nast. Follow the instructions during the registration process to subscribe to your choice of magazine.

Is this your first Race? Fundraising is easy. Just visit the Komen Greater NYC Race website for a wide range of tips including how to fundraise via Facebook. And if you’d like some reasons to fundraise for Komen Greater NYC, here are a dozen that should help you.

This year, we are launching a series of three Team Captain Meet ‘n’ Greets, which are live sessions here in the Komen Greater NYC offices where you can learn firsthand from Komen Greater NYC staff, other successful team captains, both corporate and individual. Swap ideas, ask questions about anything on your mind, and pick up materials, such as Race posters, applications, postcards and more.

Finally, if you’d like to know what Komen Greater NYC does with the funds you raise and donate, read all about where your money goes.

“This year, we’re offering some great incentive programs to make fundraising even more exciting,” said Michelle Marquez, Komen Greater NYC Director of Development. All summer, we’ll be running series of Fun-Raiser Challenges with great prizes, and this year’s Pledge Prize Program is better than ever so we hope everyone will sign up and start fundraising today.”

Summer Fun-Raiser Challenges
Throughout the summer, Komen Greater NYC is offering Fun-Raising Challenges — special contests that will allow Race registrants to immediately win exciting prizes and, in many cases, also be eligible for Race pledge prizes.

All challenges will cover a short time frame. This month’s challenge and prize is for the first 25 people to raise $500. For achieving that milestone, they will receive the boxed set of the first season of HBO’s hit Boardwalk Empire.

There was a second challenge for the first person to raise $1,500 before June 20. This challenge was won by Amy Bell, team captain of Bell’s Breast Friends, who received tickets to a New York Yankees/Cleveland Indians game.

Be on the lookout for the next Summer Fun-Raiser Challenge in July. If you’re not registered yet, sign up soon so you don’t miss out on the opportunity to get in on the fun.

Pledge Prize Program Returns
Last year, Komen Greater NYC introduced a new Pledge Prize program to thank our supporters for all they do. The program allows people to earn fantastic prizes based on total pledges collected online and/or postmarked by October 31, 2012.

Rewards include Komen Race for the Cure merchandise, iPods^®, jewelry, headphones, music systems, luggage, kitchen appliances, bikes, clothing and more!

Take the $250 Challenge! Raise just $250 and you’ll have arrived at Level 2, where prize options include stereo headphones and travel alarm clocks.
