A Dozen Reasons to Support Komen Greater NYC

1. Komen Greater NYC is the only metropolitan New York City organization that underwrites a wide variety of community-based breast health programs in New York City, on Long Island, and in Westchester and Rockland Counties, which provide unparalleled education, screening, treatment and support to at-risk women.
2. For 22 years, Komen Greater NYC has been dedicated to serving the breast health needs of women, men and families regardless of age, race, gender, socioeconomic status or sexual orientation.
3. At least 75 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to local community breast health grants and funding for national research to find the cures.
4. Since its founding, Komen Greater NYC has been funding local breast health education, screening, treatment and support programs with the best outcomes and greatest community impact and investing in national research to find the cures.
5. In one grant year, some of the services Komen Greater NYC funded include:
   • Breast health education for 82,937 people.
   • 27,218 clinical breast exams
   • 19,292 mammograms
   • Support services for 10,761 women and their families.
6. Funds provided for national peer-reviewed research have helped produce groundbreaking advances such as:
   • The discovery of the first breast cancer genes, BRCA-1 and BRCA-2;
   • The development of treatment and prevention therapies for hormone-dependent breast cancer; and,
   • The identification of Receptor-positive breast cancer and development of targeted therapies, which have helped decrease recurrences of the disease by an amazing 50 percent.
7. Komen Greater NYC has continued to increase funding of these grassroots community programs despite the most difficult economic times in recent history.
8. Komen Greater NYC has provided much needed access to critical breast health services, which has helped to save lives.
9. Komen Greater NYC grants are awarded following a rigorous grant application review process, judged by a panel of experts in the field, and each grant is monitored during the term to insure fulfillment of services.
10. Komen Greater NYC constantly assesses local community needs so it can better understand the needs of our communities and best address the gaps in breast health services and support.
11. Komen Greater NYC set up a coalition to help sustain New York State’s Cancer Services Program in collaboration with the American Cancer Society (ACS) and other cancer organizations.
12. As a result of a Komen Greater NYC- written white paper, Through the Wrong Door, women in New York State received access to the Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program, which provides eligible women with a cancer diagnosis expedited access to Medicaid, regardless of whether they were screened by the New York State Cancer Services Program.
