2017 Race for the Cure

Team Sheila

Dear Friends and Family,

As you know, our beautiful mother Sheila Bebchick passed away on April 18 after living with metastatic breast cancer for close to 10 years. Throughout all the almost daily treatments, doctors' appointments, clinical trials and tests, she stayed positive and strong up until the very end. She was a constant inspiration, our hero and the namesake for our team. We miss her terribly.

In early December 2013, at age 39, Rachel was diagnosed with breast cancer. In light of our family history, she demanded early mammograms and ultrasounds, which may have ultimately saved her life. Taking a page from our mom, she has faced this frightening diagnosis with such inner strength and fearlessness.  We are all so happy and blessed to report her positive prognosis as she reaches her 3.5-year survivorship. You can read more about her story on her fundraising page.

Eight years ago, we formed Team Sheila to honor our mom’s fight and all of those who struggle every day with this horrible disease.  In that short time, Team Sheila has raised an astounding $115,000 and our family was named the Komen Greater NYC’s Co-Survivors of the Year in 2015 and Team Sheila won the Stronger Than You Think Award last year.

Breast cancer has unfortunately touched all of us in some way (and our family in more ways than we would have hoped), and it is our prayer that our children’s generation will never have to hear the words breast cancer when they are our age.

This race will no doubt be very hard given that we won’t have our mother physically there, clad in her pink survivor t-shirt, cheering us all on. We know that she would want us to keep fighting and keep telling our story. She will be there in spirit and we will run in memory of her, a super mother, wife, nana, daughter, sister and friend!

If you are in the NYC area on September 10, 2017, we would love for you to be a part of our team. Last year we had over 50 Team Sheila participants, including runners of all abilities and walkers. All Team Sheila team members will be provided a custom Team Sheila t-shirt! Bring your kids, we have shirts for them too! If you are unable to attend, we are raising money for Susan G. Komen and ask that you kindly donate what you can… for us, it is the participation that counts!

Please sign up directly to join our team by August 11 if possible, so that we can order the shirts in time for the race.

Any questions, please let us know!
