Dear Friends and Family,
Our beautiful mother Sheila Bebchick passed away on April 18, 2017, after living with metastatic breast cancer for close to 10 years. Throughout all the almost daily treatments, doctors' appointments, clinical trials, and tests, she stayed positive and strong up until the very end. She was a constant inspiration, our hero and the namesake of our team. We miss her terribly.
In early December 2013, at age 39, Rachel was diagnosed with breast cancer. In light of our family history, she demanded early mammograms and ultrasounds, which may have ultimately saved her life. Taking a page from our mom, she has faced this frightening diagnosis with such inner strength and fearlessness. We are all so happy and blessed to report her positive prognosis as she reaches her 4-year survivorship. You can read more about her story on her fundraising page.
Nine years ago, we formed Team Sheila to honor our mom’s fight and all of those who struggle every day with this horrible disease. In that short time, Team Sheila has raised an astounding $145,911 and our family was named the Komen Greater NYC’s Co-Survivors of the Year in 2015 and Team Sheila received the Stronger Than You Think Award in 2016 and the SUPER Squad Award in 2017.
Breast cancer has unfortunately touched all of us in some way (and our family in more ways than we would have hoped), and it is our prayer that our children’s generation will never have to hear the words breast cancer when they are our age.
Last year’s race was very hard without our mother physically there clad in her pink survivor t-shirt and cheering us all on. We know that she would want us to keep fighting and keep telling our story. She will always be there in spirit and we will continue to run in memory of her, a super mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend!
If you are in the NYC area on September 9, 2018, we would love for you to be a part of our team. Last year we had close to 50 Team Sheila participants, including runners of all abilities and walkers. All Team Sheila team members will be provided a custom Team Sheila t-shirt! Bring your kids, we have shirts for them too! If you are unable to attend, we are raising money for Susan G. Komen and ask that you kindly donate what you can… for us, it is the participation that counts!
Please sign up directly to join our team by August 15 if possible, so that we can order the shirts in time for the race.
Any questions, please let us know!
