Over 24,364 people — including 1,657 survivors — jammed Central Park West and Central Park on September 13th for the Komen NYC Race for the Cure. Uma Thurman, Cyndi Lauper, Gabrielle Union, Stephen Colbert, Donna Hanover, and Judge Judy Sheindlin were joined by Senator Charles Schumer, Governor David Paterson and Mayor Michael Bloomberg to help kick off the 2009 Race.
Race participants have raised over $5.1 million! These monies will be used to provide grants in 2010 to community-based organizations providing life-saving breast health, education, screening and treatment to people in New York City, Long Island, Rockland and Westchester Counties. Next year, we will also be making grants to offset New York State budget cuts in cancer screening, ensuring that women have access to mammograms.
You probably know someone whose life has been affected by breast cancer. At the Race, the sea of pink survivor shirts gave everyone hope that we can beat this devastating disease. Your participation in the Race helps Komen Greater NYC underwrite work that ensures there will be even more survivors in the future.
Thank you for your support of the Komen NYC Race for the Cure. The 2010 Race, which is the 20th anniversary of the Komen NYC Race for the Cure, is Sunday, September 12th. Stay tuned for more information!
